The scenery, film work,props and costumes cannot be faulted. Two families, the Collards and the Vandervents, are connected in marriage and own a toy business together but can hardly stand the sight of each other. Symons had used the Death of Ivan Illich as a source of inspiration for his writing: The investigation of Paul Vandervent into the mysterious death of his father brings further discord among two feuding families tied together in business and marriage, living under the same roof. Here we have a “racy” look at a dysfunctional Victorian family, with a sympathetic pitch for an adulterous, manipulative wife accused of murder; she is “only following my nature” and laments that society will punish her for it. It is set in two houses on Blackheath, both owned by one family, the Mortimers. The Mortimers pass on, but they are succeeded by their progeny and their respective mates. The other memorable passage is the poetry evening scene – a program of recitation and songs – so life-like in its portrayal that I feel I have personally participated in the event that happened over years ago.

Marg rated it it was amazing Mar 16, No matter how much they set the scene with financial problems, wills, professional jealousy and ambition, they throw it all away at the last to show us a pervert in a tizzy. That’s part of the entertainment factor!
